Years of sun exposure can do a lot of damage to your skin. It’s well known that many stubborn wrinkles, creases, and fine lines come about due to too much sun. However, other visible signs include blotchy or discolored skin, facial redness, spider veins, enlarged pores, and more.
At West Dermatology/Cosmetic Laser Dermatology, we don’t believe it’s necessary that you suffer the effects of aging or sun exposure. As one of the most acclaimed dermatological centers in the country, we are proud to offer cosmetic and medical dermatological care for skin conditions arising from years of photodamage, including intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment, which has proven to be effective for patients who want to improve their appearance without the blisters or burns associated with chemical peels or laser resurfacing. In fact, the Medical Director of West Dermatology/Cosmetic Laser Dermatology was actually one of the inventors of this procedure! What Is IPL Treatment?
Treatment with intense pulsed light is referred to in different ways – fotofacial, photofacial, or photorejuvenation – but the target is the same: restore your glowing, radiant skin by treating the following conditions:
- Sun damage
- Brown spots
- Spider veins
- Redness or flushing
- Age spots
- Freckles caused by the sun
- Enlarged pores
- Fine wrinkles, lines, and creases
IPL treatment uses a machine gently shooting pulses of intense broadband light into your skin during a process that takes five to 30 minutes depending on the area(s) being treated. During spider vein treatment, the light is absorbed into your blood, causing your veins to shrink and, after one to several treatments, eventually disappear. Your skin is left clear and refreshed, with no trace of unsightly veins.
For age spots and other skin discoloration treatment, undesirable melanin (pigment cells) are pulverized into minute particles with the targeted light before your body gradually and naturally rids your system of them. The result is healthy skin and a noticeable glow.
If you suffer from the embarrassment of redness, age lines, or wrinkles, IPL treatment from an experienced cosmetic dermatologist could benefit you. The pulsed light narrows the blood vessels in and under the skin and helps stimulate collagen production deep in the skin, which minimizes the appearance of your wrinkles or lines and reduces or eliminates the redness.
IPL treatment is simple, non-invasive, cooling, not messy, and only mildly uncomfortable, if at all. One to two treatment sessions are recommended at three-to-four week intervals followed by treatments every six months to both maintain and continue improving your appearance. Think of it like you would a “teeth cleaning.
The Benefits of IPL Treatment
After the procedure, you might have mild swelling or redness at the site of treatment, but they both should disappear quickly. There should be no blisters or burns, and you’ll have very little downtime, if any. Most patients recover quickly and resume their normal daily routines with little disruption.
Although no after-care is necessary, you’ll still want to follow routine sun protection procedures, such as wearing sunscreen with at least SPF 30, sun-protective clothing, or a wide-brimmed hat.
After one or two sessions, you’ll see your age spots, freckles, spider veins, and redness disappear. Your wrinkles and lines will have softened to the point that your skin is smooth and supple. Your skin will glow and people will pepper you with questions about your “secret” to looking so youthful.

Ideal Candidates for IPL Photorejuvenation
IPL treatment in the hands of an expert dermatologist at West Dermatology/Cosmetic Laser Dermatology is versatile enough to be tailored to your specific needs. To maximize the effectiveness of this minimally invasive treatment, the wavelength of the pulsing light can be altered. This allows us to treat any skin type and many kinds of photo skin damage.
If you have skin damage on your face, arms, hands, neck, or chest – or anywhere, really – IPL treatment could benefit you. If you have fine facial lines, creases, or wrinkles from sun damage or aging, IPL could benefit you, as well.
Light skin usually responds the best to this light treatment, improving skin texture, reducing lines and wrinkles, erasing discoloration, and decreasing pore size. If you have darker or tanned/brown skin, consult the experts at West Dermatology/Cosmetic Laser Dermatology before deciding to undergo treatment, as people with these skin types are more susceptible to complications from IPL and require a more specialized form of treatment.
IPL treatment works for men as well as for women, though patchy hair loss on parts of the face, arms, or chest after a session is common in men with a fair amount of hair in these places.
