Aging gets under your skin in a variety of ways. Wrinkles, age spots, and sagging skin can adversely affect even the mentally strongest of people. Our appearance is how the world initially views us, so blemishes from aging can cause a shyness or self-consciousness that you did not. One byproduct of aging is the existence of sagging skin under the chin, commonly known as a double chin, although this can be blamed on genetics or weight gain, as well. In many cases, there is not enough exercise or dieting that can eliminate a double chin.

What Is Kybella?
Kybella is a unique, FDA-approved, profile-enhancing injectable product that has a very specific use – destroying fat cells under the chin to reduce sagging skin or a double chin.
The main ingredient in Kybella is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, which your body naturally makes to aid in breaking down and absorbing fats. Once injected into your body, the acid destroys fat cells where it is injected. What makes Kybella treatment unique is that once the fat cells are destroyed, fat can no longer be accrued or stored by those cells, so you should expect to have no further treatment once you reach your goals.
It could be the ideal treatment you’ve been looking for if you have a double chin that you’re embarrassed or self-consciousness about, making you feel as if you look older or heavier than you actually are.
What to Expect from a Kybella Procedure
Kybella injections are administered by a cosmetic dermatologist into the skin directly under your chin. For best results, a series of four to six sessions every 4 weeks is strongly recommended, although this is subject to a variety of factors. The number of injections in one session also depends on several factors, with your dermatologist determining the correct amount for your unique needs.
Many patients report virtually no pain from the Kybella injections. At most, a tingling or stinging sensation is experienced. However, if you have an aversion to needles or simply want to be more comfortable during the procedure, you can have an ice pack or a topical numbing agent, such as lidocaine, applied to the area.
Each Kybella treatment session takes just a few minutes, and you should not have treatment more frequently than once every four to six weeks. There is little downtime associated with Kybella, especially as treatments continue.
Before each session, one of the expert dermatologists will examine you and determine the number injections you need based on how much fat you have and what your desired profile is. Don’t be surprised to see visible results in as few as two weeks, though you should more reasonably expect noticeable results after two to four sessions. As mentioned earlier, you shouldn’t expect additional Kybella treatments once you reach your desired aesthetic profile goals.
Kybella Side Effects
Most side effects from Kybella treatments are temporary and self-resolving. The most common ones to expect are as follows:
- Pain or soreness
- Hardening of the skin near the injection site(s)
Side effects can occur, as well. The injections could result in a temporary nerve injury in your jaw, which could cause temporary muscle weakness in your face or an uneven smile. If you have reactions such as these, contact West Dermatology at once. We have locations in Arizona, Nevada, and California.
